AI Will “Beat” Doctors? Surprising Research
In 2024, a new project was created within Microsoft AI , which focused on medical applications. The team included doctors, designers, engineers, and AI experts.
Artificial Intelligence in Medicine: Microsoft's Multi-Step TestThe work involved creating a Microsoft AI Diagnostic Orchestrator (MAI-DxO) model. It was trained using the New England Journal of Medicine (“NEJM”), which publishes detailed information about the patient and their condition. The described cases require extensive knowledge from various fields of medicine and numerous diagnostic tests.
Based on 304 patient cases published in the journal, the Microsoft AI team built multi-step diagnostic processes, in which the AI model or doctor can order tests and ask questions. Once the answers are received, the diagnostic process moves on to the next step.
Microsoft AI recently shared the results of a study testing AI in medical diagnostics. The results were surprising – AI outperformed doctors.
AI in Medicine: Four Times More Accurate Diagnosis Than Experienced Doctors– Using real-world medical records (…), we have demonstrated that Microsoft AI Diagnostic Orchestrator (MAI-DxO) correctly diagnoses up to 85 percent of cases, which is four times better than a group of experienced clinicians, Dominic King and Harsha Nori reported on the Microsoft AI blog.
The AI results were compared with a group of 21 practicing physicians with 5-20 years of clinical experience – they achieved an accuracy of 20%.
Moreover, AI guaranteed the correct diagnosis at a lower cost than in the case of doctors – the process took into account the virtual costs of diagnostic activities ordered by doctors and AI.
